February Report

Post by: Snarky on March 1st, 2006 | Filed Under Uncategorized

I decided to check my logs for this past month, and boy was I excited to see them. While I made up a good portion of the traffic ('bout 16% of it!) due to updating, using the website as a drop box, etc, there was about three times as much traffic this month, as last month! You can find the full logs here, and I highly recommend perusal (if you understand 'em).

Some things of note:

  • 661 different IPs connected
  • The Valentine's Day post brought 1.5 times more traffic than any other post
  • Just how many hits I get from web searches for Warhammer related material (its at least one a day)
  • Mozilla served 1337 pages... I think this is definitive proof that it's the best browser.
  • Unix is kicking the crap outta Windows in terms of traffic (good choice!)
  • I've had 71 requests for javascript files, and I don't believe I have any.
  • It appears I have a broken link to Thinkgeek.
  • 20 people "lost" their passwords (I only have 8 users)

So, it appears someone may've been playing with my site trying to get some passwords, or find a vulnerability. But, I just love that Mozilla stat.

Botnets

Post by: Snarky on February 18th, 2006 | Filed Under Uncategorized

Well, there's a good article on botnets, and how they work here. I had an argument in Chicago this summer with a friend who couldn't see the point in them. I hope this article will effectively articulate the danger, and fun, of such nets.

Simply put, a botnet is a network of computers that run software to allow another person to control them. Some call them zombies, for good reason. The software that's run can be anything. It can view your screen, make you download programs, turn on your webcam. Anything that the creator wants.

Well... I'm addicted to them, I'll admit it. I recently came across an interesting format to represent them. You can read more about that on the other site.

Oops

Post by: Snarky on February 13th, 2006 | Filed Under Uncategorized

Sorry 'bout that last post on LiveJournal. The new design moved the "Excerpt" box, and I filled in the wrong thing. Oh well. I also moved my script to a more secure location, so... hopefully these things won't happen again. Just for fun, I'm uploading a picture of my workstation in the Burrow, a CS lab behind key-card access on campus. My favorite place to work (on campus).

Oh, it's also to test the file upload feature, and see what it does.

New Look

Post by: Snarky on February 13th, 2006 | Filed Under Programming, Uncategorized

Well, some big changes just happened. I've (been) upgraded to WordPress 2.0.1 for starters. This is cool. There's some new stuff (notice the search bar on the front page), and the backend got a BIG redesign.

Also, I've decided to go get me a theme, as the guy that gives me hosting just started a WordPress blog and made (is making?) a cool theme. I'm starting with a base citybridge, and will be editing it over the next few days (hopefully, only days). I'm gonna be changing the text colors, a tad, the big image, and maybe the curly looking things. So, use the comments to let me know if you like, or hate, or what part you like or hate, of the new theme(s). (Broad enough for ya?)

Been super busy as of late, once I get approval, I'll let ya'll know about the research I'm doing here.

Interesting Trend

Post by: Snarky on January 31st, 2006 | Filed Under Interests, Uncategorized

Hmm... I've noticed this whilst checking my stats and logs the past coupla weeks. People are using interesting browsers. For instance, one person regularly checks my site using Konqueror. I salute you. If you want any fame, go ahead and leave a comment that it's you... I can compare IPs, however, so don't anyone try lieing.

I also had a Lynx hit today, though that might have been me while playing with perl and facebook, I can't remember.

I can't sleep, not sure why, so I figured I'd play with some stuff.

Anyone interested in Screen Scraping should definatly check out the WWW::Mechanize module for perl.

I'm currently trying to fix the stupid ATI crappy software! It would kill them to write drivers and TV suites that didn't require endless googling for information to get it to work.

There's a few of you (not sure how many actually read this) who have expressed interest to me in learning how to program. I haven't been very helpful, yet, due to having to run around, and do real work... *sigh* But if you're interested, and have time, let me know. I can find good tutorials, or make 'em, whichever is needed. A comment here would be fine, or yelling at me on AIM.

Stats

Post by: Snarky on January 25th, 2006 | Filed Under Uncategorized

Interesting feature. Due to someone's comments over Christmas Break I installed a stats feature. Just to see, you know... stats.

For those of you who have a username here, you can view them as well! It's quite interesting to look at, and easy to tell some trends.

  • When the search bots come through and index the site (every page is viewed once)
  • When people check their LiveJournal friends page (a whole mess of page views, and the only referrer is someone's friends page).
  • And other fun stuff.

So... if you have a login, feel free to check it out. But if I find anyone exploiting it (there are some ways) I'll just lock it down for only myself again.

Oh, and the link is on the right hand side under "User Commands"->"Stats".

Spring Cleaning

Post by: Snarky on January 22nd, 2006 | Filed Under Uncategorized

Well, do to the fact that it's felt like spring out here all week (highs in the 50's) and somewhat sunny, I got in a cleaning mood. So I called up a good friend, and we not only reformatted our computers, but took them completely apart and cleaned everything.
