Curse-gaming – Two months later

Post by: on February 4th, 2007 | Filed Under Profession Helper, Programming

Two months ago Curse-gaming made a huge site resdesign. One that I was not too happy about for a number of reasons. Now, it might have been a bit unfair for me to make that assessment when I did, as curse had just released the update. naturally there was a bunch of bugs to work out as no testing phase catches all of them, and I pounced at a bad time for them. Well, in the past two months Curse has fixed most of the bugs, and I'm back to using the site as a distribution vector for my addon.

Profession Helper’s User Base

Well, I've noticed some interesting things regarding my World of Warcraft addon, Profession Helper.

First off it seems more Germans use my addon than Americans (or at least, English speakers). I note this because checking the logs of referrals to my site, more people come from the German section of Curse-gaming than the English one.

Also, I can tell what guilds are using my addon. You may think that's absurd, but its quite easy. The good guilds (from my standpoint) are one who link to the developers site from a downloads page. I've found a few that don't in fact link back to me, but most do. So, once a guild lists my addon, I'll get about 5-10 hits over a few days from that guild's downloads section. Really cool, actually.

Just started working again on that bug that really killed my production a few weeks ago. Lets hope I can solve it...

A Good Design

Well, here's a design I'm quite proud of. I redeisgned Profession Helper's interface this past week, and I think it looks pretty slick. I took away the four big ugly buttons, and put in a drop down box to select where the tells go. Also, I made the text smaller to fit it all neatly in the same(ish) space. Finally, I've added a slider to change how many of which item you want. Currently the range is one to 50, although that might go up to 100 in the near future. Well, don't just stand there, have a look!

Just Poor Design

So, a while back I mentioned I make a World of Warcraft addon, Profession Helper. This used (well, still is until the site lets me delete it) to be hosted on Curse-Gaming. Well... here's why I wanna delete it.

Curse-gaming used to have an amazing site.

  1. It was clean, fonts and colors and every fit together.
  2. It was easy to use, one could find whatever they needed in very few clicks. Very few.
  3. It was stable, I never had one error using it for 8 months.
  4. It was fast, (I know archive.org isn't, please believe me) since there wasn't that much media, the pages loaded almost instantly
  5. It just plain worked.

Profession Helper

I've decided to enter the world of addons for World of Warcraft after getting fed up with having to advertise materials for what I can make as an Engineer individually. It got annoying. So, to that end I've started Profession Helper. I threw it up to Curse Gaming, and it got 57 downloads (for an ALPHA!) in the first 10 hours. I'm really stoked about that, and plan on making this a great product, as well as working on another addon I had an idea for, and one person suggested I add into PH.

I have to say Blizzard makes it really ease to mod WoW, since every addon is just a LUA file, and an XML file. In fact, that's all that their UI is also, so you can modify that as well. Looks like this should be a fun little month or two of addiction before I find another love.
